Up forward, the auxiliary sailing rig is carried to port and uses a pivoting mast in order to store inside the boat along the port side at all times. To support the mast, the inside face of the port side is reinforced with 1/2" plywood. The plans show the mast step itself actually glued to the interior flooring that will be installed over 2" thick foam on the bottom of the boat. I didn't see any reason not to integrate the mast step right to the bottom of the boat, so that's what I did. In practice, it would potentially be easier to replace the mast step (if ever required) if it were on the flooring per the plans, but in my estimation the amount of surgery required to do that would be so involved anyway, that it seemed better just to make the step as best I could and plan to not replace it. To get everything lined up just right, I made a stub proto-mast, seen in this view clamped into its upright position. This allowed getting the pivot pin hole and the mast step into the proper relationship for a good fit of all parts.
Once the step was located and installed, I scribed the arc of the swing of the mast heel with a pencil, and cut foam to fit the volume under the swing, then topped it with 1/8" plywood. It seemed a good idea to make it difficult for water to collect here in order to avoid rotting the mast step or the slot it pivots in.
With the step and foam installed, the proto-mast was used again to check the swing of the heel.
After everything is cured, the inside of the mast slot was primed and painted with the interior color of the boat - gray in this case. It will be awkward to paint this area in the future once the top of the bow locker is installed, so it got several coats of both primer and paint.
Once the slot was painted, the portside interior wall of the bow locker, which also supports the mast, was installed. The face inside the slot was also primed and painted prior to installation. This panel has a reinforcing piece of lumber on its aft edge to take the cleats for sailing rig. I decided to use screws to mount the cleats, but the building key indicates that these can be bolted instead. If bolting, the slot face of the locker panel needs to be counter bored to take the nuts and washers. Note the small drain hole in the reinforcement piece - I'm hoping this will drain any water that collects in the slot. Also note the hole in the mast step for the mast heel guy.
